A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 60 adults over ten weeks studied the source culture from which ZL01 was later isolated, with measured cardiovascular and metabolic outcomes (Oben et al., Lipids in Health and Disease, 2007). Separately, independent compound research has characterized pheophorbide a, a chlorophyll-derived molecule present in the algae, and its activity on iNOS and NF-kB signaling (Qiu et al., Molecules, 2020).
